The Merchant of Venice: a story of love and friendship

Ayesha khaan

On 10th of March, 31 years old theater group of Delhi the "Dramatech" performed its play 'The Merchant of Venice', at Sri Ram Centre.

It was an adaptation of the famous Shakespeare play by the same name but just with the much needed twist. The actual role of Shylock , is left for the readers to decide, whether he was a villain or a buffoon or even a tragic hero.

The actors played their roles perfectly from Antonio to the key holder everyone did justice to their parts. Sanjiv chopra who played Shylock gave the audience goosebumps by his performance , the way he delivered each line, as if it was his very own . With each word, each line, his character was shouting to be heard out loud. The lead actress of the play Kangan, who played Portia took the audience's breath away by her beautiful appearance and performance. The accent, the pride, the grace that she portrayed was just amazing. In short, all the actors were commendable.

The Director of the play deserves more praise than anyone else for she broke the "stereotype Jew" image of Shylock and presented him as somewhat a tragic figure.
